Shimadzu Corporation is a worldwide leader in the design and production of specialized scientific systems, precision equipment and components for a wide range of scientific, medical and industrial applications. Founded in 1875, Shimadzu has grown to a $3 billion multinational corporation with over 11,000 employees worldwide. Shimadzu Corporation headquarters is located in Kyoto, Japan. The Canby Oregon facility was established in 1997 and is known as Shimadzu U.S.A. Manufacturing, Inc. (SUM) SUM occupies a 108,000 square foot facility on 15 acres of land. It includes an office area, warehouse, stockroom, production assembly, a precision machine shop, precision sheet metal shop, and research & development laboratory. The U.S.A. operation was designed with world class manufacturing techniques made famous in Japan. Currently, there are about 150 employees and that number is expected to grow as production expands. The Canby plant is part of Shimadzu’s Analytical Division and manufactures the High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) and Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GCMS). These are analytical instruments used to determine the quantity of specific chemicals in a sample. The primary customers are the pharmaceutical, bio-tech, bio-medical, and environmental industries.
